We're Giving Away a Free Brand Foundation, Worth $3,500, to One Buffalo Small Business

I have spent most of this summer opening one Buffalo small business website after another and giving each one about five seconds before I decide whether it told me what I needed to know. I wrote about that test back in July. What I didn't write about, because I hadn't fully admitted it to myself yet, is how many of those five-second failures had nothing to do with the website at all. The site was often the symptom. The actual problem sat one layer back, in a brand that had never been strategized in the first place, just assembled once, years ago, and left to run on its own.

A logo a friend made in an afternoon. Colors picked because they looked nice in Canva that week. A voice that changes depending on who happened to write that month's post. None of it wrong exactly, all of it built without ever answering the one question a brand is supposed to answer, which is what does this business sound like when nobody's in the room to explain it. I have sat across from enough owners at this point to know the gap isn't skill. Every business I'm describing is good at what it does. The gap is that nobody ever sat down and did the work of turning that skill into a brand a stranger could recognize.

So this month I'm doing something about it instead of just writing another post about it.

I'm giving away a full Brand Foundation, the strategy, positioning, identity, and brand guide I normally build for paying clients, worth $3,500, to one small business in the greater Buffalo area. Free. Not a discount, not a smaller version, the entire thing I sell. And because I'd rather this help more than one business, everyone who completes an application gets 15% off, whether you want the brand work alone or brand plus a custom website, whether you're the one I pick or not.

I know how a giveaway sounds. I've spent months here publishing real pricing and real client numbers because I think most of what passes for marketing is noise, and a contest can read like exactly the kind of noise I've been arguing against. Here's the honest version anyway: July closed with real growth everywhere except the number that matters, and the diagnosis wasn't effort, it was reach. Publishing a blog post reaches people who already read blog posts. This reaches people who don't, because a friend tagged them, or a customer nominated them without asking first. If that's a stunt, it's one I'm willing to name and run anyway, because the businesses I'm hoping it reaches are exactly the ones five-second homepage tests keep finding.

Who can enter

Any small business operating in the greater Buffalo area. That's the only requirement. I'm not restricting this round by industry, though if you've read anything else on this blog you know where my client work tends to land: wellness, fitness, salons, medical practices, service businesses. If that's you, good. If it isn't, apply anyway.

How to enter

Two ways in. Apply for your own business directly through the form at vagaricreative.com/contest, five questions, takes a few minutes. Or nominate one you love, your favorite trainer, the salon you keep recommending, the shop you've been meaning to tell everyone about, and I'll reach out to them myself. A nomination alone doesn't enter anyone. The business still has to say yes and fill out their own five questions, but you're the one who got the door opened, and more than one of this week's applicants told me they never would have applied on their own.

How I'm choosing

I read every entry myself. No random draw, no public vote, no algorithm. This is a merit-judged contest, which is a specific legal thing and also just an honest description of what I'm doing: looking for a business that clearly needs this, that can tell me why in its own words, and that's willing to let me show the work as it happens, because that transparency is the whole reason any of this is worth doing publicly instead of quietly. Full official rules, eligibility details, and how applicant information gets used are published on the entry page itself, before anyone submits anything.

The timeline

Entries close September 16. I'll spend the following week narrowing the full list down to a short set of finalists, and I'll feature them here and on social the week after that, one at a time, so you can meet them before I announce anything. The winner gets announced September 28, and I start the actual brand work with them the same week. If you're picked, there's a bonus on the back end too: once your Brand Foundation is finished, you get 20% off building a custom website on top of it.

What you're actually winning

A Brand Foundation is the part of this work that never shows up in a logo file. It's the positioning that tells you what to say and, just as usefully, what to stop saying. It's the identity system, so the next ten decisions get made once instead of re-argued every time someone new touches your marketing. It's a guide you can hand to a designer, a new hire, or your future self at 11pm trying to write a caption, so the brand sounds like the same business every time. I've built this exact package for real Buffalo owners this year, businesses that started with nothing more than an idea and thirty years of doing the work in some other field entirely, and watched what happens once there's finally a document that says, plainly, this is what we sound like. That's what's sitting at the other end of this application.

If you've been running your business on a brand you inherited by accident rather than one you actually chose, this is the fall to fix that for nothing, or close to it. Apply at vagaricreative.com/contest, or send me the name of a business you'd nominate instead. I already know some of what's going to land in that inbox is going to be somebody bragging on a business that isn't even theirs, and I'm looking forward to reading every one of those the same way.
